SQ3RComprehension is so important in math and a math textbook
is often hard for students to read and understand, but by using the
SQ3R strategy students will have a better understand and might even
enjoy math (Kennell, n.d.). SQ3R or survey, question, read, recite, review can be thought of like this:
Before Reading
During Reading
After Reading
Tied to Writing
The SQ3R strategy allows students to write questions and think about what they want to learn. As students are reading the text, they have to write the answers to those questions using details from the text. Students will be able to write and review their information, adding to it as they review to support the headings and questions from the chapter.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.6.2.a
Introduce a topic; organize ideas, concepts, and information, using strategies such as definition, classification, comparison/contrast, and cause/effect; include formatting (e.g., headings), graphics (e.g., charts, tables), and multimedia when useful to aiding comprehension. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.6.2.d Use precise language and domain-specific vocabulary to inform about or explain the topic (Common Core State Standards Initiative, 2015). |

Solving Math Problems Using SQ3R Method
(Hervey, 2012)
During this video, Hervey is showing how to solve a math problem using the SQ3R comprehension method. He emphasizes on the reciting portion, stressing the four parts to reciting: seeing, saying, hearing, and writing. He takes it step by step, doing a sample problem as you go, so students would be able to learn and understand this strategy.
How to use the SQ3R Strategy
(Jonson, 2013)
This video does a great way of visually displaying the steps used for the SQ3R strategy. It is a very engaging video that demonstrates the different steps to the strategy. Teachers will be able to see student comprehension by seeing the questions the child wrote, along with their notes, or response for the text.
Question Answer Relationships
(Aranguiz, 2010)
This video takes a closer look at he questions the students create. It shows how to learn to write questions and your questions fall into four different categories. Two of these are: right there and think and search, these answers are found within the text. The other two types of questions are: author and you and on my own, where these answers are found in your head. This strategy really makes students think about their learning and find a purpose in what they are reading.
