Main Idea/Detail Graphic Organizer
This strategy is especially helpful with descriptive text or sequencing text. This graphic organizer provides students with the framework needed record the main idea of a text and the supporting details for the text (Miller & Veatch, 2011, p. 65).
Often you can find the main idea within the topic sentence. It is important to remember that all of your details will lead back to your main idea, kind of like clues, but sometimes your main idea won't be so obvious. Then you need to be a really good detective and use your prior knowledge and the details to infer what the implied main idea is (Yorke, n.d.). Procedure

During this video there is three key components that are discussed, in detail about how to:
Introducing Main Idea and Supporting Details to your Class
(McGraw-Hill Education, 2014)
I think that this is a great video to get students engaged in learning about finding the main idea using the supporting details. It gets students excited and in the right state of mind. I do believe that it is important for students to think like a detective, and this is a great way to get them into the role, while still learning and using those clues to find your main idea.
Main Ideas
(Carrigan, 2012)
Carrigan goes through seven steps to help find main ideas in many different types of text. He does a great job of showing where to find the main idea and asks questions to get the audience to think and understand how to find the main idea.
Tied to Writing
I believe that the main idea graphic organizer is a great way for students to help organize there findings. In math, students can use the Main Idea/Detail Graphic Organizer to list the sequence of steps need to find the solution to a problem.
