Tied To Writing
Students will use writing to create a visual concept map, highlighting important concepts or vocabulary to the main topic, then drawing connects between the concepts to show how they are related. The students will then describe the concepts and characteristics of the headings in a summary.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.6.2.a
Introduce a topic; organize ideas, concepts, and information, using strategies such as definition, classification, comparison/contrast, and cause/effect; include formatting (e.g., headings), graphics (e.g., charts, tables), and multimedia when useful to aiding comprehension. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.6.2.b Develop the topic with relevant facts, definitions, concrete details, quotations, or other information and examples. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.6.2.c Use appropriate transitions to clarify the relationships among ideas and concepts (Common Core State Standards Initiative, 2015). Additional Resources

Course: EEC 428 Professor: Dr. Lori Piowloski Minnesota State University, Mankato Concept Mapping For Developing Your Research
(Belk Library, 2013)
The video discusses what a concept map is and how to create one. It will allow you to create questions and relationships from concept to concept in a visually organized way. The video game an example and went step by step, showing how to create the concept map. I think it was engaging because of the use of humorous visuals; these graphics would keep students interested. The video could be used before writing a research paper. This could be the first assessment before writing, checking that students will be researching correct material and concepts.
Classroom Assessment Technique: concept maps
(Rohrbauck Stout, 2008)
Dr. Rohrbauck Stout mentions the positives for using concept mapping including: writing papers, planning lectures, thinking creatively, and assessing student learning. Concept maps are drawings and diagrams that show connects with concepts. Rohrbauck Stout mentions that creating concept maps with your class allow for a way of assessing student learning through written ideas. This idea is engaging for students because it is a visual and students help create the mapping, showing their comprehension of the topic.
